By Karen Williams, The Book Mentor
Over the last few weeks, ‘pivoting’ has been the word banded around my business circles, with many people needing to do something different to keep their businesses alive.
Whilst I work from home and my business as a Book Mentor is carrying on as usual, many of my clients are affected by Covid 19. Some have lost vast amounts of business, so they are reassessing their priorities, and many are looking to the online world to do something different.
I also know, however, that in this uncertain world, people are finding it hard to make decisions. We’re all on a rollercoaster of emotions and, in reality, the current situation isn’t going to change hugely anytime soon.
It’s my belief that the most successful business owners who will come out of this situation thriving, rather than just surviving, will be those who have the courage to do something different. And, let’s face it, wouldn’t it be great to focus on something other than the news and social media distractions?
I work with business owners who are writing a book to build their authority and advance their business, and some have less excuses now. With time being the biggest barrier for many, if their work has been reduced, then it is the perfect time to write a book.
I’ve been making the most of my self-isolating time. Over the last few weeks, my ‘pivoting’ has been to work on a new online programme sharing everything I know about the book writing journey, which will help those with an idea to get on and write it in the easiest and most efficient way.
But easy and efficient isn’t just about writing it. If you’re writing a book right now, what’s important is that you raise your profile, you validate your message and you fund it as you write it, especially if lost business has led to lost revenue, and you want to keep focused and positive during this challenging time. This is how my programme will help clients who want to write their book.
And here, I’m not talking about a publishing deal. I’m talking about looking for new opportunities, like running a pilot programme, getting sponsorship for your book, taking pre-orders for your book, or even crowdfunding. All of these will take the pressure off you, enabling you to write it more effectively, and building your profile and credibility at the same time.
Just think… By the time the world gets back to ‘normal’, whatever that normal might look like, you could have your book written, new clients who you are already serving, and people who have pre-ordered your book.
So, if you’re thinking, ‘Yay, I want a bit of that, where do I start?’, here are some things to think about first.
What? And who?
Get really clear on what you’re writing and who it’s for before you start writing. If you want to use your book to position you as an authority, to raise your credibility, and to enable you to stand out, then writing a niche book to appeal to your ideal client and reader is more likely to help you to achieve success.
You can use your book as an opportunity to connect with these people now, find out what they want help with and then deliver it through your book, and potentially through your services as you write it.
Decide the best way to write it. In the current times, I suggest you don’t squirrel yourself away for weeks and months to write. Use this as an opportunity to run pilot programmes, either one-to-one or via a group programme. This will allow you to self-fund your writing and get feedback on the information you share.
If you have free time in your diary right now, or can make some free time, then it’s time to get on with your book. If you wait until the economy and the world gets back to ‘normal’ then you’ll be on the back foot. What could you do right now to get some planning and writing time into your diary? And how can you make it happen?
If you’d like some help with the next steps, then please get in touch and we can chat through your ideas.
